Diabetes is an epidemic in Hispanic communities – not only do 10% of Hispanics have diabetes, but few know that diabetes is a leading cause of heart disease or stroke.
Hispanics and Diabetes, the next installment of TWI’s Healthy Living series, examines in detail the disease that afflicts more than two million Hispanics (particularly those age 50 plus), how it occurs and how to live with it
The special will also share important information about:
- Its Causes: Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanics to have diabetes. Risk factors for diabetes are more common among Hispanics.
- Consequences: At least 65% of people with diabetes die of heart disease or stroke, yet only one in four Hispanics with the disease know they are at risk.
- Controling Diabetes: By controlling blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetics can live longer, healthier lives
The American Diabetes Association has created a national awareness program, “Si Tienne Diabetes, Cuide Su Corazon” aimed at helping Hispanic Americans better understand the need to control all aspects of their diabetes and to help prevent heart disease.
